‘Pretty Little Liars’ Recap:
Can we all just agree that Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) is “A,” and call it a day already? The July 2 episode of Pretty Little Liars painted the elder Hastings sister to be guiltier than ever, as Spencer (Troian Bellisario) followed her to Hector’s creepy cabin in the woods and caught her red-handed. Well, she technically caught her mask-handed, but she was still being shady as hell.
After some light prodding, Melissa confessed that she and several others had been unknowingly helping Detective Wilden (Bryce Johnson) in his attempts to assassinate the liars, but also that someone else was controlling Wilden. She raised the very valid point that, let’s be real, Wilden was never smart enough to orchestrate his own master plan.
So is Melissa the reason Wilden’s now floating in Hot Detective Heaven? Spencer sure thinks so, but Hanna (Ashley Benson) will still need some convincing. She’s pretty positive that Ashley (Laura Leighton) is the one who pulled the ‘metaphorical’ trigger — though it could also have been a very literal trigger.
Personally, I don’t think it was either one of them. Even though the most obvious suspect is often the right one — see Mona as “A” — I think there’s more to the story this time around.
Aria & Jake’s Awkward Encounter
Aria (Lucy Hale) finally got some alone time with Jake (Ryan Guzman) this week — I love them together, and I don’t care who knows it — but sadly, an unexpected third wheel crashed their date: Ezra’s son Malcolm! Naturally, Jake had a few questions about the encounter, all of which Aria was foolish enough to answer honestly. Seriously, you’d think after all these years, Aria would have learned the truth gets her nowhere!
Anyway, she came clean about the whole ‘You’re Not The First Teacher I’ve Dated’ thing, and Jake dropped a surprising statement on her: He’s sure she still has feelings for Ezra! ”You’ve gotta figure out if you’re hurt or you’re injured,” he told her — you know, just in case anyone had forgotten how damn dreamy he is.
Toby’s Big Adventure: Mom, Mystery & Macaroons
Toby’s (Keegan Allen) search for the truth about his mother’s death led him to Saratoga Springs, where he encountered arguably the creepiest old man this show has served up to date. When the crazy old doctor wasn’t offering Toby macaroons — the creepiest of snacks, if you didn’t already know — he was rambling about “that blonde girl,” who apparently caused quite a bit of trouble for Mrs. Toby while she was staying at Radley.
Could the old man have been talking about Alison (Sasha Pieterse)? I knew that trick was still alive!
No One Puts Emily In A Corner
And then there was Emily (Shay Mitchell), who seemed to do everything in her power to ruin her parents’ lives this week. After seeing the doctor behind their back, she got super pissed at Mr. and Mrs. Emily and ran away from home — which, in case you didn’t know, is a great way to prove to the authorities that you have a stable home life.
The doctor had told Emily she might need more surgery, but Paige (Lindsey Shaw) told her she probably wouldn’t. And that’s fine because Paige is totally a doctor.
